Patrick Byers - MU Extension - Springfield
"The ABC's of Garden Pruning"
Patrick Byers, Univ of MO Extension Horticulture Specialist, Springfield, MO, was born in Nebraska and raised in the Midwest. He can trace his interest in fruit and vegetable production to market gardening while he was in his teens. His educational background includes an associate degree in commercial horticulture from the University of Nebraska, a bachelor’s degree in horticulture from the University of Missouri, and a Master’s degree, also in horticulture, from the University of Arkansas. Job experience includes 3 years at the University of Arkansas Fruit Substation, where he served as research associate in the peach and apple breeding programs, and 18 years as Fruit Grower Advisor at Missouri State University’s State Fruit Experiment Station in Mountain Grove.
Sarah Becker - Lincoln University - Mt. Vernon
"Improving Ozark Soils"
Sarah Becker is a new face to Missouri’s Southwest Region extension team. Originally from Iowa, Sarah attended Iowa State University where she received a bachelor’s in horticulture in 2008 with a focus on fruits and vegetables. Following graduation, she diverged from her emphasis of fruits and vegetables and delved into greenhouse management, becoming a grower for Swift Greenhouses (wholesale perennial grower in Gilman, IA). She is excited to join Lincoln University Cooperative Extension 2501 Program in providing outreach and assistance to beginning, limited resource and minority farmers.
We look forward to hearing about how to improve our soil.
Lee Coates - Peggy's Flowers - Highlandville
Secrets to Growing Perennial Flowers Made Easy
It is always a treat to have Lee Coates from Peggy’s Flowers discuss what he is so passionate about, perennials. We know of no one else with more knowledge on the subject. With over 17 years of experience, Lee and his wife Peggy grow more than 450 cultivars of approximately 75 species of perennials. Lee will shed some light on the subject of easily growing perennial flowers.
Alice Troyke - Master Gardeners of the Ozarks - Kimberling City
"Bringing in the Garden for Fall"
Besides being a "hoot", Alice is one of our most active Master Gardeners. She presents her subjects in the most hilarious but informative ways! Her topic in this year's workshop will be of interest to anyone trying to decide what to do with all of those wonderful plants which won't hold up outside through the winter.
Bill Eskes - Grimes Horticulture - Ozark
"Planting for Fall Color"
Bill Eskes from Grimes Horticulture will share wonderful suggestions for fall season
extenders. Those flowers thrive in the cool nights and warm days of fall and tolerate
some frost. He'll most likely recommend eye-catching combinations of a variety of plants to add color and foliage variations.
